Can a women wear pants; meaning, is it a sin for her to do so? Does the scripture Truly say that a women cannot wear pants?
I will use this subject to explain what I mean when I say, “You must not just know truth, but moreover understanding as well.” To know truth is only to tell me of an event exactly as it occurred, but to understand truth, this means that you understand what you tell is true. Take the portion of blue in the title above for instance. What’s in blue? Tell me the truth. To answer the question, what if I were to say, “What’s in blue is: ‘Can a women wear pants’? Is this true? No this is not true, being off by a single character, which is the semicolon:( ; ). Yes one character can make a answer either right or wrong, true or false. And there is no midway! When you understand the strict and perfect nature of the Truth then you can understand Truth enough to see it everywhere you look.
Matthew 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Luke 16:17 And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.
These are the things we must keep in mind when we’re reading the Word of God. Now lets get the scripture regarding women and pants:
Deuteronomy 22:5 The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.
Let’s state the exact truth of the scripture above in Deuteronomy. Using Truth, what does it say regarding women? It say’s that if a woman wears that which pertaineth unto a man, she is an abomination unto God. Very simple. This is a general statement, not specific. Now out of this comes the condemnation of a woman wearing pants. The reasoning behind this condemnation is geared towards the understanding that pants wear originally made for men. There are two ways in which teachers try to prove this: biblical and historical. Archeologically, we discover that men and women wore skirts, robes, dresses, etc. alike. Robes made for men and robes made for women; skirts made for men and skirts made for women. It’s only understood from this that it is possible to make pants for men and pants for women. There is no archeological proof of pants being worn; therefore, archeology cannot be used to prove anything pro or con.
Does the Bible say anything about pants?
Biblically the scriptures that many use to show that pants are made for a man is as follows:
Exodus 28:42-43 And thou shalt make them linen breeches to cover their nakedness; from the loins even unto the thighs they shall reach: And they shall be upon Aaron, and upon his sons, when they come in unto the tabernacle of the congregation, or when they come near unto the altar to minister in the holy place; that they bear not iniquity, and die: it shall be a statute for ever unto him and his seed after him.
The passage is the very first account of anything remotely resembling pants. What is said is that out of breeches came pants, which were originally made for men. Whither this can be proven or not in another matter in itself. In the passage above breeches are made for Aaron and his sons. Now, the only way to understand the passage above is to evaluate it with the Spirit of Truth. What does it exactly say; better yet, what does it exactly describe breeches to be? According to the passage above the purpose of breeches were to “cover their nakedness.” Yet again, very simple. The measure of them goes from the loins even unto the thighs they shall reach. Now correct me if I’m wrong, but the thigh is above the foot and the calf muscle and the knee as illustrated in the images below:
The passage describes that breeches reach only to the thigh and are meant to cover nakedness. In today’s world we know these to be underwear or drowse by definition as in the picture. Now the key question to ask is, “Is underwear only for men?” Of course it is ridiculous to say so because it is necessary for women to have underwear as well to cover their nakedness. By this understanding, this scripture has nothing to do with pants and neither are breeches/underwear a man only thing.
The truth is this, there is no scripture in the Word of God that speak about pants. There is nothing in the Word of God that can be used to justify the teaching that pants are for men.
The only thing left to evaluate is if whither there is any historical proof of pants being originally for men.
Is there any historical proof that pants are for men and not women?
The world stretches far beyond America. If fact, America is the last source of historical significance that I would consider, being so young and all. Any argument using America as a key point of reference is invalid in there is a source predating it. Pants excised long before America. The image belong shows the oldest pants know to man:
These pants were found in Asia. They are found to be over 3000 years old. Because of this America is over ruled. That’s is the truth. And in Asia, the debate about women and pants never existed. Women wore pant in the gardens and in the fields. Women even road horses and the wore pants to do so. Historically men and women wore the same form of clothing but the make of clothing has always been distinguishable.
The scripture in Deuteronomy 22:25 literally means that whatever pertains to a man, women are not to wear it. If it was made for a man than it is for a man; if for a woman it is for woman. It’s that simple.
Now lets review the fallacy of judgement with twisting the scriptures. The learned know that judgement has to be right are else it will fall on your own head. Judgement can only be right once the Truth is discovered. If you don’t know the Truth, shut up. Don’t judge. Don’t do anything. Be quite and wait until the full understanding of the matter is learned.
What if I just don’t want my wife to wearing pants?
That’s fine for you and your house hold there is no fallacy in this. The fallacy arises when you judge people based on your own beliefs and not the Word of God. Women can wear pants unless their husband forbids it. Women must be submissive to the law of their own husband. The command for women regard clothing is as follows:
1 Timothy 2:9-10 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
Modest apparel: That’s it! The commandment is ‘Modest Apparel’. If you don’t know how measure modest apparel, it is first measure by the Word of God through the understanding of what apparel causes lasciviousness and avoiding the apparel that does. Secondly, let every husband add any measure accordingly, because if he feels his wife needs to cover up a little more then so be it. One wife may look modest in a certain apparel that another wife may not look so modest in. This is the diversity that God has ordained; therefore, we must decree accordingly.
